Verizon will allow users to opt out of what's called a "unique identifier header" or UIDH, a digital ID that's used to track its customers' browsing behavior.
Security researchers are voicing concerns about a "zombie cookie" exploit of the Verizon Wireless UIDH that can continue to follow users even after they've tried to delete it.
Verizon's UIDH is used for targeted advertising. The company originally stated users can opt of the UIDH's use for some purposes, but the identifier itself cannot be deleted
The problem: Even if a user deletes tracking cookies, it's possible for third parties to exploit the UIDH to undelete those trackers without a users' (or even Verizon's) consent, according to experts and news reports. It's called a zombie cookie. Read more...
