Internet service providers will now need to offer faster service if they want to label their products as "broadband."
The Federal Communications Commission voted on Thursday to change the minimum speeds for what can be considered broadband Internet. The move has major ramifications for regulation of companies that provide Internet access, particularly as consumers watch more online video that requires greater speeds
Internet services will now need to provide download speeds of 25 Megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of 3 Mbps. The previous standard for broadband had been 4 Mbps download and 1Mbps upload. The current national average of Internet speeds in the U.S. is around 10.5 Mbps, according to a study from Internet infrastructure operator Akamai. Read more...
