The rumored update to Android Wear that was supposed to bring with it Wi-Fi support has now been made official by Google. It will be rolling out to all existing smartwatches running the wearable platform, starting with the new LG Watch Urbane. The new software should have reached all devices within the next few weeks. Wi-Fi support isn't everything that's new here. Apps now get the ability to be always-on and keep your watch's display on all the time. Previously such functionality was limited to the screen that shows you what time it is. From this point on, however, developers can take advantage of this feature, so their apps stay visible for as long as needed. Interestingly, the screen of the watch will only be full color when you're actively looking at it, in a bid to save power. Moving on, gesture support is now built into Android Wear. So you can flick your wrist to scroll through your notifications. Apps and contacts are just a touch away from the watch face - you only need to tap the screen and you'll be able to start apps and send messages at once. And if you want to send an emoji, you simply have to draw it on your smartwatch. Google will recognize it and send it along to your intended recipient. As for the Wi-Fi functionality, this means watches that have the necessary hardware will work with your smartphone even when the two aren't paired via Bluetooth. OnePlus had started the rollout of the much awaited Android 5.0 Lollipop based Cyanogen OS 12 system update for the One last week. Few lucky folks managed to download the CM OS 12 and many kept waiting for the OTA update. Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus shared on Twitter that the OTA update was paused to add a new ‘OK OnePlus' voice activation feature in the update. Sony Xperia Z4 was announced in Japan today and it's an incremental upgrade with the Snapdragon 810 chip being the key change. As it turns out the lack of fanfare for the Xperia Z4 launch in Japan was intentional, as the phone will remain as an exclusive for its homeland. Instead Sony will be premiering a proper flagship smartphone later this year, supposedly this May. There are no details on the alleged flagship phone, but if previous rumors are to be trusted we'll be seeing a screen resolution bump. Sony recently promised to focus on the user experience instead of only hardware upgrades, so we should expect improved Android OS and proprietary apps. The Apple Watch pre-orders are in full swing, but the delivery date for new orders keeps slipping back. The principal of Think Big Analytics, Carl Howe, estimates that Apple has sold 3 million units already and now that Quanta has gotten the hang of building watches Howe thinks the company will produce 2 million a month in May and June. However, Howe says, this will not be enough to match demand. The most affordable Apple Watch Sport will sell the most units, having moved an estimated 1.8 million already. The Apple Watch comes in second with 1.2 million while the expensive Watch Edition is at around 40,000. Considering that these three differ mainly on their external case, the margins on the Watch and Watch Edition are much higher than on the Sport. So much so that the estimated revenue (of around $2 billion total) is dominated by the Watch, then the Sport and the Edition is a close third. Yes, the Watch Edition units have premium gold exterior, but not enough to make up for a significant part of the $10,000 price tag. LG has been sharing teasers of its upcoming flagship G4 set to go official on April 28. While the phone is still under wraps, LG Korea confirmed that the G4 will hit the stores on May 31 or at least in the company's home market. Earlier today, LG announced it will offer free screen replacement and free 64GB microSD card for all those who pre-order the G4 in Korea. As you might know LG is also running a LG G4 trial program in few countries to let a select group of people try out the phone before it officially launches. The bezel-less Oppo R7 is back with another video, this one is a bit over a minute long so it gives us a better look at the upcoming flagship. The Oppo R7's claim to fame is that the 5.5" screen has near-invisible bezels on the side. Global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2015 stood at 291.2 million units, down 9.2% compared to the last quarter of 2014, according to a latest report from market research firm TrendForce. "The decline, which was larger than the initial estimation, was attributed to the weak smartphone market in China," the research firm said in a press release, predicting that the market will recover in the latter half of Q2. As far as smartphone manufacturers are concerned, Samsung claimed the top spot with 27.8% market share, followed by Apple with 19.9%. Huawei, LG, and Lenovo rounded-up the top five with 7, 6.2 and 6% market shares, respectively. Oppo has launched a new budget Android smartphone in India. The Oppo Joy Plus will retail for Rs. 6,990 ($111) and is Oppo's cheapest phone on the market. The Joy Plus has a 4.0-inch, 800x480 display, MediaTek MT6572 SoC with dual-Core 1.3GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 4GB internal memory, 3 megapixel rear camera, VGA front camera, 1700mAh battery, and Android 4.4 KitKat. Recently Microsoft made available the Windows 10 Technical Preview for Lumia 520/521 and 525. These are the weakest phones among the Windows Phone 8 gang with just half a gig of RAM. The update process went well for the early adopters, though issues arose when trying to roll back to Windows Phone 8.1. Apparently lots of users, who didn't want to stick with the Windows 10 Preview got their Lumia 52x bricked after trying to revert back to Windows Phone 8.1. Some devices got stuck on a red Nokia logo, while others just went dead with nothing on the screen. Microsoft has a dedicated Windows Phone Recovery Tool, which usually saves bricked smartphones. Unfortunately it doesn't help with the bricked Lumia 5 series. Microsoft now has a new version of this tool, which should help recover the bricked Lumia 520/521/525. According to Microsoft the major issue was with the data writing size and speed. Microsoft basically lowered the image files and the writing speed. The company doesn't promise this updated toll will fix all bricked Lumia 52x, but it should work in most cases for those with a red Nokia logo and with the black screen. Microsoft is still investigating the problem and is working to bring back to live all bricked Lumia smartphones. Meanwhile the Windows 10 Preview update is on hold until all issues are resolved. Recently, OnePlus CEO revealed that the company is planning to launch two new smartphones this year - a OnePlus One successor and a cheaper model. However, it wasn't clear whether any, or which of the two would be unveiled at its event today. Now, multiple reports are claiming that the Chinese smartphone manufacturer could unveil the cheaper model today. UK e-retailer Expansys has dropped the price of Samsung's Gear S smartwatch, which was unveiled back in September last year at IFA and went on sale a couple of months later, from the usual £330 ($494) to £275 ($412). The price drop, however, applies only to the Pure White model of the smartwatch, with the Blue Black model available on demand for £285 ($427). Xiaomi sent out invites last week for the launch of a new global Mi phone in India on April 23. Over the weekend, the Chinese startup shared several cryptic teaser images via its social network profiles. Quite cheekily, the teasers carried text mocking the Apple with "i" bearing words. The first teaser carries two images of Monalisa painting where one is pixellated while the other looks crisp. A text below the renders rhetorically asks if they look the same. The second teaser image suggests that the upcoming Xiaomi creation will pack large battery in a compact body. The final teaser hints that the handset will have premium build quality. The upcoming ZTE Nubia Z9 made yet another unscheduled appearance. This time around, screen grabs from an unreleased TV ad allow us to catch a new glimpse of the soon to be revealed smartphone. Counterclockwise may as well be called "nostalgia trip." We start off with very recent history - Samsung's bold predictions of the Galaxy S5's sales numbers. Then we venture further back in time to watch phones try - and succeed - to predict the future, only to meet an untimely end. Galaxy S5 dreams big History has a unique way of embarrassing us - a lesson Samsung learned the hard way. Back in April last year it proclaimed the Galaxy S5 will outsell the massively successful Galaxy S4. It also said that a Tizen smartphone will be out in Q2 2014, but let's not dwell on that. Early numbers were on Samsung's side too, the S5 broke S4's first day sales record. Having launched in 125 countries put it in a great position to expand quickly and indeed it outsold its predecessor by 30% on Day 1. Not long after it lost momentum. Lesson learned, Samsung redesigned the S5 successor from the ground up and the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are enjoying unexpected success - unexpected as Samsung's estimates proved too conservative and the company is now scrambling to meet the high demand. Interestingly, the pricier (and arguably more attractive) Galaxy S6 edge is selling on par with its flat-screened sibling. Those things aren't cheap though, the Galaxy S5 cost $256 to manufacture, up from $244 for the Galaxy S4, however the Galaxy S6 edge cost Samsung more than ever to build - $290 for the 64GB version. Nokia 5800 brings touch to Symbian The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was one Nokia's first touchscreen Symbian phones and sadly one of its last best-sellers. It launched in November 2008 and offered a lot of bang for the buck, partly because of its well-stuffed retail box. Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Black official photo In April 2009 a silver version cropped up - well, it had a silver rim, the phone was still black. With a 3.2" touchscreen, Wi-Fi, GPS and powerful stereo speakers the 5800 was a lot of phone for $370/€280 back in 2009. The screen was an old-school resistive touchscreen, which meant no multitouch. It did come with a stylus about three years before the first Galaxy Note, that was more out of necessity than invention though. Still, a clever programmer figured out how to fake multitouch for a Guitar Hero type game. Entertaining as it was, it couldn't rescue Symbian, which only had bolted-on touch functionality and was up against iOS and Android, which were designed for touch from the ground up. Motorola Atrix sees the future Symbian wasn't ready for the touchscreen future, but sometimes being ready for the future is a bad thing. In April 2011 Orange UK announced that it will launch the Motorola Atrix in May and offer its various docks at reduced cost. Those docks were something to behold. The Atrix ran Android on a then powerful Tegra 2 (dual-core 1GHz processor) and it could turn into a laptop or a multimedia station with the right dock, complete with full-size keyboard, USB and HDMI ports. That same year Asus launched the Transformer - an Android tablet (coincidentally with just about the same chipset) that attaches to a keyboard dock to turn into a laptop. The Transformer has multiple successors, including a phone that docks into a tablet that docks into a keyboard, but neither it nor the Atrix conquered the market. Since then transformable laptops (really tablet + keyboard dock) are being pushed by both Intel and Microsoft - one pushes its new low-power chipset, the other its touchscreen UI. Canonical shortly had plans to revisit the Motorola Atrix formula, but based on Ubuntu Linux. Those plans were cancelled. Phone chipset these days rival laptop processors from the time the Atrix came out and we've seen several functional multitasking add-ons to Android. Also, the new USB Type C combines a display, data and power cables into one very convenient package, making the custom connectors of the Atrix and Transformer obsolete. So, maybe soon we'll get to power our laptops and desktops with our phones. Still, predicting the future did these precursor devices little good. Another busy week has passed and the mobile realm is ever so active with plenty of interesting news to go around. Once again, we will briefly recap what you, our loyal readers, found most-interesting during the past few days. We kick the list off with a name which seldom captures the spotlight for long enough to make it to this article - Huawei. On Wednesday, however, the Chinese manufacturer had everybody's undivided attention for the eagerly-anticipated launch of the company's new flagship. The Huawei P8 made its official debut, equipped with a 5.2-inch FullHD display and the brand new Kirin 935 chipset, just as expected. It, however, was joined on stage at the venue by a much more-surprising new device - the Huawei P8max. It is powered by mostly the same silicon as its sibling, but is significantly bigger. In fact, with a 6.8-inch 1080p display, it is kind of stretching the limits of phablet dimensions. LG is also gearing up for a huge upcoming premiere. On April 28, the company has promised to unveil its latest flagship device - the LG G4. It has also been the object of rumors for quite some time now, but with the official premiere closing in, a lot more information is now known about the impressive handset. It will allegedly feature a next generation 5.5" QHD IPS Quantum display and, most likely, a Snapdragon 810 SoC and 3GB of RAM. But its different styling is perhaps the most discussed aspect of the new device. The LG G4 will come with a slick leather back, which is definitely some out-of-the-box thinking on LG's side. Just over a month after brokerage firm Morgan Stanley said that the BlackBerry Passport and Classic aren't selling well, the Canadian company has started selling the unlocked version of the devices at discounted prices on its online store (hit the Source link below). The Passport, which usually sells for $599, is available for $549, while the $449 Classic can now be bought for $399. CyanogenMod is perhaps the most popular custom Android build out there today and consequently, it has been getting a constant flow of attention from developers, tinkerers and android-enthusiast all around. The latest 12.1 version of the OS has finally made it out of the source code realm and on to actual device builds. So if your handset currently supports CyanogenMod 12, it is most likely updatable to 12.1, which is, in fact, based on the AOSP version of Android 5.1. This brings the popular custom ROM up to date, seeing how Android 5.1 is currently being seeded to Nexus devices, as well. Even better yet, Cyanogen developers promise that the new version is directly installable over an existing CM 12.0 install, so no data loss should occur. There is a catch, though - all third party add-on zips must be manually updated to run properly. So the challenge is actually finding the proper, Android 5.1 compatible versions that don't crash on the new OS. On another CyanogenMod-related note, some of you might remember a recent scoop about a partnership between Microsoft and CM, boiling down to the integration of MS apps and services straight into the custom ROM. The whole story was quickly debunked, but Cyanogen took the liberty of reiterating this along with the new builds announcement.
