Kurds Struggle for Control of Kobani as ISIS Inches Closer

Heavy clashes gripped the northern Syrian town of Kobani on Monday as a battle raged on between Kurdish forces and Islamic State militants for control of the key town near the Turkish border. The Kurdish militia, led by the People’s Defense Forces (YPG), have been holding off ISIS forces from the town for weeks, after the group captured dozens of nearby villages.

Journalists observing the clashes from across the Turkish border, located just a few hundred yards from Kobani, said that the distinctive black flag of ISIS was raised on a hilltop on the eastern side of the town.
