Wave after wave of severe thunderstorms tore across the Midwest on Monday evening, leaving at least two people dead and many areas flooded, while providing a stunning display of lightning across the Chicago metropolitan area. The storms, known as a "derecho" to meteorologists for their long-duration damaging winds of at least 80 miles per hour, swept from Iowa to Wisconsin, Illinois and even into Michigan.
The National Weather Service logged 435 reports of winds in excess of severe limits, which is 58 miles per hour. This included an 81 mile per hour wind gust in South Hubbard, Iowa; an 80 mile per hour gust near Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and 90 mile per hour winds near Dubuque, Iowa. These winds knocked out power to hundreds of thousands from Iowa to Indiana, and the one-two punch of storms left many roadways flooded and aircraft grounded at Chicago's busy O'Hare International Airport.
