KIEV, Ukraine – It was one year ago that Kiev erupted in bloody clashes that killed dozens of protesters, and eventually led to the downfall of Viktor Yanukovych, the former Ukrainian president who fled the capital under the cover of night, slipping across the Russian border.
Fuzzy black-and-white security camera footage from the ex-leader’s lavish Mezhyhirya compound showed Yanukovych packing his bags and expensive works of art into several black SUVs and helicopters, before one of them airlifted him away.
Yanukovych's ouster allowed for a pro-Western government to take control in Kiev, outraging Moscow. Since then, Ukraine has seen Russia annex its Crimean peninsula and back separatists in the country’s east, where war continues to rage to this day.
Evgeny Feldman, a photographer for the Russian publication Novaya Gazetta, returned to Yanukovych’s estate this week to photograph its sprawling grounds, and meet its newest residents: eastern Ukrainians who fled the war. Read more...
