When video of ISIS militants destroying a priceless seventh century statue at a museum in northern Iraq surfaced on Thursday, historians and archeologists the world over sounded the alarm.
The destruction at the museum is a devastating loss, they say, as the ransacking of the "cradle of civilization" affects us all.
"When we are losing these things, we are losing even the capacity to understand some things about our earliest history," said Samuel Hardy, an archaeologist who specializes in conflict antiquities and cultural property crime.
