WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has vetoed a Republican bill forcing construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline.
The White House sent notice of the veto to the Senate on Tuesday, shortly after the bill was received at the White House. It's the third veto of Obama's presidency.
"Through this bill, the United States Congress attempts to circumvent longstanding and proven processes for determining whether or not building and operating a cross-border pipeline serves the national interest," Obama wrote in his veto message to Congress, adding that the bill "cuts short thorough consideration of issues that could bear on our national interest — including our security, safety, and environment."
