The Department of Justice won't charge George Zimmerman for the death of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black teenager he shot and killed on Feb. 26, 2012
The DOJ said there was "insufficient evidence" to show that Zimmerman purposefully violated Martin's civil rights when Zimmerman followed him as Martin was walking home carrying only a bag of Skittles and a bottle of iced tea
A case would require evidence that Zimmerman attacked Martin because of Martin's race, the DOJ said
“The death of Trayvon Martin was a devastating tragedy,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement released online. “It shook an entire community, drew the attention of millions across the nation, and sparked a painful but necessary dialogue throughout the country. This young man’s premature death necessitates that we continue the dialogue and be unafraid of confronting the issues and tensions his passing brought to the surface. Read more...
