Reviewing a game like Super Smash Bros. is almost an exercise in frivolity. Nintendo's fighting game mushpot of its signature franchises is legend for uniting — and dividing — friends under the glow of one television. But the 2014 edition is taking some big risks with the franchise, which was a top selling title for every Nintendo console it landed on. Now Super Smash Bros. is traveling to unfamiliar territory: it's going portable.
Viewing a game like Smash Bros. as a whole is almost like trying to spectate one of its more rambunctious battles. Things seem like pure chaos, a hodgepodge, until you pull back and see the deliberateness of it all.
