Extant's lackluster first season came to a messy end, failing to tie up several loose threads by closing credits. However, the two major plot lines involving Ethan and the Offspring finally merged, and — as we suspected — they ultimately faced off in the roles of protagonist and antagonist, respectively.
We learn that the blue-colored "interlaced energy fields," now called "spores," can control human behavior and access people's minds just by being in close contact. Because they can scatter through the Earth's atmosphere and potentially infect the population (fun fact: There's 9 billion people in Extant's world) if the Seraphim burns on reentry, Molly is tasked with moving the space station, which is off its course. However, as B.E.N. notes, this mission has a "slim degree of margin and high degree of risk."
