Prosecutors in San Francisco and Los Angeles threatened Uber, Lyft and Sidecar with legal action this week if the companies do not promptly make major changes to the way they operate.
The San Francisco and Los Angeles district attorneys sent letters of warning to the ride-share companies after a joint investigation between the two offices concluded that the companies are illegally calculating individual fares for carpool rides and making misleading claims about driver background checks
The district attorney offices said new carpool features that allow separate passengers going in the same direction to share a car but pay individually are in violation of state law and ordered the companies to remove this option. The California Public Utilities Commission sent letters to all three companies earlier this month warning them that this ride share option was illegal. Read more...
