"Clinkle is a movement to push the human race forward by changing how we transact."
That was how Lucas Duplan described his payments startup Clinkle last year. It was an impossibly ambitious promise, but one that seemed slightly more plausible based on the startup's initial support. Duplan, a 20-something wunderkind, managed to raise about $30 million in funding from big names, including Andreessen Horowitz, Intel and Richard Branson. He also hired top execs from Netflix and Walmart, and at one point attracted a wait list of more than 100,000 users.
The one thing Duplan and his startup hadn't accomplished was the product's actual launch. Months passed; high-profile employees departed the company, while Square and Apple expanded their own payments services.
