On July 5, 1989, NBC aired the first episode of Seinfeld (then known as The Seinfeld Chronicles), a television sitcom that hadn't been picked up for the fall season and seemed unlikely to make any sort of dent on history.
Twenty-five years after that broadcast, Seinfeld has become one of the most celebrated TV shows in TV history. Like I Love Lucy, The Mary Tyler-Moore Show and Cheers, Seinfeld would go on to redefine the sitcom genre, leaving an indelible mark on television as a medium. It is not hyperbolic to say that Seinfeld is one of the most and culturally important comedic works of the last 30 years.
