Paris unity march: A day of catharsis after four days of hell

PARIS — The city needed this. After four tumultuous days of uncertainty and violence, that began with the worst terror attack France has seen for half a century and continued with an intense manhunt followed by simultaneous, bloody hostage scenes, it really needed it.


Parisians have been through a lot since Wednesday, and emotions in the city have run from shock to sadness to anger. On Sunday, as a persistent drizzle gave way to a day of sunshine and an actual rainbow appeared over the city, they got to feel something different.



A sense of anticipation had been building on the Place de la République all day. The square in central Paris was the scene of the vigil hours after the horrific Charlie Hebdo attack, when thousands held pens aloft in solidarity for the murdered journalists and cartoonists. Since then, the statue of Marianne has been plastered in tributes and lit by a thousand flickering candles as visitors streamed by, day in day out. Read more...
