'The Voice' Recap: A Budding Coachmance and A Week of Fierce Competition

Coachmance

After an exciting start last week, The Voice returned with another round of auditions this week, featuring two returning hopefuls, a total of five 4-chair turners and the show's first blind singer

We also continued to witness the developing coachmance between Gwen and Pharrell, as well as appreciate Blake's witty one-liners and the emotional roller coaster that is Adam Levine

As a group, the coaches were certainly more wary of turning their chairs too early, all waiting to hear the particular voice missing on their teams. Diversifying their teams was the goal.

Rescuers Spend Hours Saving a Dog Caked in Tar

Tardog

Determined rescuers in India gave new life to a dog in a painful situation.

A passerby noticed a dog covered in tar and frozen in place after he fell into a hot tar pit in Rajasthan, India. A call was placed to Animal Aid Unlimited, a local rescue center for street animals in need of assistance

Rescuers spent nearly three hours over two days massaging the dog with vegetable oil to loosen the tar from his fur.

The process was visibly painful for the dog, but the end of the video reveals a clean dog with a wagging tail, eager to gobble up some treats Read more...

Boob-looker

Smile gawkers, you're on Hidden-Nestlé-Boobie camera!

Nestlé is taking an unusual, yet on-topic approach to raising awareness for its #CheckYourSelfie breast cancer awareness campaign with this stunt. The jury is still out on whether this is an effective campaign to raise awareness for #CheckYourSelfie but I think we can all admit that they get an A for effort... or shall I say Double D for effort? Maybe I shouldn't.

'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D': Flowers for Agent Cooper

Kyle.maclachlan

We've known since August that Kyle MacLachlan was coming to Marvel's Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D. this season, but there was no realizing the full, surreal impact of seeing the erstwhile Agent Cooper in the Marvel universe until it actually happened.

Well, cue the snappy jazz and put on some damn good coffee, because MacLachlan — who is presumably Skye's father — shows up at the very end of Episode 2, "Heavy is the Head," and he is definitely weird. He has an equally bizarre little sidekick in Raina ("the girl in the flower dress") who's returned after an absence in Episode 1 that almost made us forget the huge hint-bombs she was dropping at the end of Season 1. Why Denver Public School Students Are Protesting For AP History

Denver-protestk

Hundreds of students and teachers at Denver-area public schools are skipping classes to protest a school board proposal that could change the way AP U.S. History is taught in the district as well as board-mandated tweaks to teachers' pay

Two Denver high schools were shut down on Monday after a vast majority of teachers called in sick or took personal days while students picketed in the streets, chanting and waving signs that accused the district of trying to censor American history. The districtwide walkouts began the day after a particularly contentious Jefferson County school board meeting on Sept. 18 and have continued through Tuesday, the Denver Post reported. Read more...

Messages Supporting Hong Kong Protesters Stream from Web to the Streets

Hkprj1

The protests in Hong Kong calling for more local control of its political future have largely played out on television news broadcasts and live blogs, constantly updated with the latest developments

But for one group of self-described media artists in Hong Kong, even this high level of focus on the protests was simply not enough. They decided to crowd source support for Occupy Central with Love and Peace (OCLP) protests from around the globe using technology

The Add Oil Machine For OCLP is a website that allows anyone with a web connection to add a message of support for the protests to a website that displays the messages, in English and Chinese, in a real-time scrolling feed. That feed is then curated by the team, led by Chris Cheung, 31, Sampson Wong, 29 and Jason Lam, 29, and messages of support are projected onto buildings near the protests at sizes of up to 16 feet tall Read more...

1907-1915: Russia Before the Revolution, in Color

Prokudin-final

Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky (1863–1944) became photographically renowned in Russia for a color portrait of Leo Tolstoy. It was this fame that, in 1909, brought him to the attention of Tsar Nicholas II.

Prokudin-Gorsky's subsequent meeting with the tsar and the tsar's family was to be the pivotal moment in his life: The tsar provided both the funding and the authority for Prokudin-Gorsky to carry out what he would later describe as his life's work.

For most of the following decade, using a specially adapted railroad car as a darkroom, Prokudin-Gorsky traversed the length and breadth of the Russian Empire, recording what he saw in more than 10,000 full-color photographs. Read more...

Tracy Morgan: 'Can't Believe Wal-Mart is Blaming Me'

Tracy.morgan

Seatbelt or no seatbelt, Tracy Morgan wasn't about to let Wal-Mart put the blame on him without a response.

A day after the retailer filed an answer to Morgan's lawsuit, claiming Wal-Mart wasn't responsible for his injuries because he wasn't buckled in, Morgan fired back:

"After I heard what Wal-Mart said in court I felt I had to speak out. I can't believe Walmart is blaming me for an accident that they caused. My friends and I were doing nothing wrong. I want to thank my fans for sticking with me during this difficult time. I love you all. I'm fighting hard every day to get back."

How Twitter Is Turning GIFs Into Cash

Twitter_money

Twitter has started making some noise about Amplify.

The ad program, which Twitter introduced last May, re-promotes moments that just occurred on TV in the form of tweets. For instance, here's a replay of Blue Jay Ryan Goins' recent barehanded catch in an early September game against the Chicago Cubs that has been repurposed as an ad for the Holiday Inn Express:

Sol Republic's Social Bluetooth Speaker Gets a Big Upgrade

CBGB's House Photographer

Ramones

Seminal New York music venue CBGB (country, bluegrass and blues, since you asked) opened in 1973 at the meeting of Bowery and Bleecker Street, and was run by Hilly Kristal. During the late '70s, CBGB was the epicenter of the punk and new wave music scenes. David Godlis was its primary documenter. Here he talks exclusively to Retronaut about his photographs.

"In 1976, three quarters of the way through the 20th century, New York City, once a thriving metropolis, was destitute. 'Ford to City: Drop Dead' was the headline of the day. The music scene, like New York, was also sorely in need of repair. But in the most unlikely of all places — in the slumping New York City’s infamous Bowery, among the skid row bums on loser’s lane, far away from the Upper East Side and Upper West Side of Manhattan — a group of like-minded musicians and artists had their sights set on the future. In a small, dingy club, they would rewrite the past and set a template for the last quarter century in music, fashion, art, literature and film. Read more...
