Tattooing is an ancient artistic practice, with body ink discovered on icemen carbon-dated to be over 5,000 years old. In some places around the world, such as Polynesia, tattoos are more than just aesthetics — they hold cultural importance.
But these days, tattoos are becoming more and more common in cities and towns around the world. According to Paul Taylor, executive vice president of the Pew Research Center, "Something as a generational badge are tattoos and piercings, perhaps in the way that long hair was for those of us who grew up in the ’60s."
