The Supreme Court surprised court-watchers Monday morning, on the first day of its new session, by denying to hear five states' appeals of pending gay marriage cases.
The states, Indiana, Utah, Oklahoma, Virginia and Wisconsin, had been seeking to prohibit same-sex marriages.
And so the non-ruling essentially paves the way for an immediate expansion of gay and lesbian unions by ending delays on marriage in those states.
