The Major League Baseball playoffs begin their semifinals stage on Friday. In the four remaining teams, we've got a people's choice, some sort of cosmic voodoo powerhouse and two teams whose mascots are birds

The American League Championship Series has the Kansas City Royals going up against the Baltimore Orioles; the National League Championship Series squares the San Francisco Giants off against the St. Louis Cardinals. Each team has reasonable hopes of World Series glory, but it's the Royals who are the unquestioned darling of this final foursome
