LOS ANGELES — That "Fifty Shades of Grey" author E. L. James was demanding, difficult and control-freaky throughout the process of adapting her zillion-copy selling book into a quadrillion-dollar box office smash is one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood. But that was just the beginning of this lurid bondage tale.


When James and her literary agent Valerie Hoskins were taking meetings around Los Angeles in the spring of 2012, the buzz was that a good measure of creative control for the fanfic author — not sheer dollars — was the biggest deal point.
