Much of the U.S. is about to go into an extended deep freeze

In a weather pattern that is eerily reminiscent of last winter’s infamous polar vortex incursions from the Arctic, the U.S. is about to be invaded by unusually cold air starting next week, which will likely last straight through the rest of the month

Temperatures will plummet to at least 30 degrees Fahrenheit below average for this time of year, from Minneapolis to Chicago and all the way south to the Gulf Coast. The chill will make it to the East Coast, too, with the Washington to Boston corridor seeing highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s to 30s Fahrenheit at times, once the first of a series of cold fronts moves through on Wednesday.
