Sunday night's installment of HBO's The Leftovers, dubbed “Guest,” should have been titled Black Swan 2: Nora Durst.
Minus the dark, deliciously campy spin on Swan Lake, Episode 6 recalls Natalie Portman’s bravura performance as a straight-laced, type-A ballerina who descends into madness amid pressure to succeed, to achieve artistic perfection, to keep it together as her world falls apart.

There’s a scene in Darren Aronofsky’s 2010 ballet-themed horror film, for which Portman won an Oscar, where the camera follows the actress — its wobbly movements matching her own — as she speed-walks with maniacal purpose into New York City’s Lincoln Center for her character Nina’s bloody final act. She’s outwardly focused and professional, but her brisk, unstable footsteps suggest an inner rage that’s about to unleash itself upon the stage. Read more...
