It has all the elements of a good superhero tale: good vs. evil, epic battles, phoenix-like rise from the ashes and a moral center. There’s even a bat. But there are no capes or costumes, and no DC or Marvel logo on this project.
Instead, the graphic novel dubbed, The Spirit of Bacardi comes from the brand itself and a partnership with comic book and graphic novel veterans Warren Ellis and Mike Allred. The 30-page illustrated novel, which launches Wednesday as a free download on Bacardi’s website and across Vice.com’s numerous blogs, tells the stormy history of the Bacardi family and the rum’s origins in Cuba.
