Is Job Interview Performance Indicative of Actual Workplace Performance?

I am interested in whether there is a direct link between the interview and job performance. Some companies require explicit ratings from interviewers after interviews — is there a correlation between those ratings and subsequent job performance?



I have met quite a few people during my professional life who interviewed well but turned out to be busts. Google has mentioned that some of their best-performing employees had horrible job interview ratings. Someone once told me that bad employees are great at interviews because they have had so much practice.



A recent New York Times article states, "...Years ago, we did a study to determine whether anyone at Google is particularly good at hiring. We looked at tens of thousands of interviews, and everyone who had done the interviews and what they scored the candidate and how that person ultimately performed in their job. We found zero relationship. It’s a complete random mess, except for one guy who was highly predictive because he only interviewed people for a very specialized area, in which he happened to be the world’s leading expert..."
