Runtastic Gets Into Wearables With Orbit Fitness Tracker

While many wearable tech companies focus on hardware first before developing a supporting app ecosystem, Runtastic is taking the opposite approach.


The fitness-focused startup, known for its run-tracking apps, is getting into wearables with Orbit, its first fitness tracker.



The $119 Orbit tracks steps, distance, calories, active minutes, sleep and ambient lighting. It can either be worn around the wrist or in a clip that can be worn on a pocket or bra strap (it comes with both a wristband and clip so users can choose how to wear it).


The company is also launching a new iOS and Android app, Runtastic Me, a companion app for the Orbit that will serve as a hub for tracking all the fitness data collected by the tracker. The app also allows users to set fitness and sleep goals and track their progress over time. Goals set in the app will influence the tracker's behavior: the Orbit will vibrate after a designated period of inactivity, for example, to remind you to get up and move around. Read more...
