The U.S. government has charged three men — two Vietnamese citizens and one Canadian — in what it is calling "one of the largest reported data breaches in U.S. history" with a variety of crimes including conspiracy to commit money laundering and computer fraud.
The defendants profited millions of dollars by stealing more than a billion email addresses from different, unspecified service providers, according to an FBI statement.
"These men—operating from Vietnam, the Netherlands, and Canada—are accused of carrying out the largest data breach of names and email addresses in the history of the Internet," U.S. Assistant Attorney General Leslie Caldwell said in the statement. Read more...
