What 'off the record' means and how to use it: A cheat sheet

It's strange to think that this week's whole Uber kerfuffle might never have happened had one of the company's executives thought to utter six vital words. We're talking about the one phrase that is kryptonite to sensational headlines: "This is off the record, right?"


The comments that sparked a scandal took place at a Manhattan dinner that was supposed to be off the record. As media critic Michael Wolff relates in USA Today , that was a rule he was bound by — but he didn't tell his guest, BuzzFeed editor Ben Smith. Nor did anyone else at the dinner, apparently, and Smith didn't ask.
