Hotels are following in the footsteps of airlines, using travelers' smartphones to provide services and streamline interactions.
Starwood Hotels and Resorts became the first chain to let guests unlock doors with their phones on Monday, after testing the program at a few properties since earlier this year.
The feature — which is available at 10 Aloft, Element and W hotels and will expand to 140 more properties in those brands by mid next year — is accessed through the hotel's app. Guests can book rooms, check in, and then use their phones to enter their room, rendering in-person interaction with hotel staff optional.
