Ukrainians on Friday celebrated the one-year anniversary of the protests that toppled its pro-Russian president.
The civil uprising, sparked by President Viktor Yanukovych's decision to walk away from an association agreement with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Moscow, began when a few hundred protesters gathered on a central square in Kiev on Nov. 21. But it quickly evolved into a violent struggle after a riot police attacked peaceful protesters with clubs on Nov. 30
Over the course of the next days and weeks, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians took to the streets in protest. Eventually, Yanukovych fled Ukraine for Russia and an interim pro-Western government took control of the country. Read more...
