At a time when at least one-third of American households have dropped landlines altogether, old-school phones are still "very important" to Americans at work. That's according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center that explores attitudes toward technology in the workplace.
Pew found email far outweighed phone technology of any kind in importance, according to more than 1,000 American workers surveyed. Some 60% of people polled called email "very important" at work, compared with the 35% who described landlines as "very important," and 24% who said cell phones or smartphones were "very important." About 54% of those surveyed called the Internet "very important," while just 4% called social publishing sites like Facebook "very important" at work. Read more...

Generosity is universal, and people across the globe participate in charitable giving. That said, there are certain countries whose residents rise above the rest when it comes to giving behavior.
According to the World Giving Index 2014, published in November by the Charities Aid Foundation, Myanmar and the United States topped the list of most charitable nations, based on donations, volunteer work and helping strangers.
The index shows that, despite continual unrest and low human progress, a whopping 91% of the population in Myanmar did volunteer work, while 49% donated to a charity and 51% said they helped a stranger. Read more...

Chinese manufacturer Huawei saw its smartphone revenue increase by around 33% to over $11.8 billion last year, according to a Reuters report, which cited an internal memo from Richard Yu, the head of the company's consumer business. Huawei shipped around 75 million smartphones in 2014, up 40 percent year-on-year, but less than the previously stated sales target of 80 million units. According to a Wall Street Journal report, outside of the home market, smartphone sales were strongest in the Middle East, northern Latin America, and Southeast Asia. However, the company is facing intense competition from fellow Chinese smartphone player Xiaomi, which became the world's third largest smartphone manufacturer in Q3 last year. The Reuters report notes that the Beijing-based company had set a sales target of 60 million for the year 2014, which is over three times compared to its 2013 sales of 18.7 million. A member of the hacker group Lizard Squad, which claimed credit for taking down Sony's PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live on Christmas Day, has been arrested by UK police, according to multiple reports
Daily Dot reports that the man, 22-year-old Vinnie Omari, was arrested Monday after police raided his home. Omari sent the Daily Dot a photo of the search warrant, claiming the police took his Xbox One, phones, laptops, USB sticks and other equipment.
Thames Valley Police posted a report Wednesday, confirming that a 22-year-old man from Twickenham, England, was arrested "on suspicion of fraud by false representation and Computer Misuse Act offences." Read more...

An appeals court in Egypt has ordered a retrial in the case of three Al Jazeera journalists convicted of spreading false news, however they were not granted bail.
A new trial is expected to take place within a month, but no date has been set, according to the BBC. A defence lawyer told journalists prosecutors said there were major problems with the verdict
The three journalists were not in court for the brief hearing Thursday.

Searchers were racing "against time and weather" Thursday to recover the dead from the crash of AirAsia Flight 8501, with a window of good conditions slammed shut by another onslaught of wind and heavy rain.
Seven bodies have been recovered from the jet, which crashed into the Java Sea on Sunday with 162 people aboard. Search crews began finding wreckage and corpses Tuesday, but in the thick of Indonesia's rainy season, the weather has frequently prevented helicopters and divers from operating while strong sea currents have kept debris moving. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said in New Year's speech Thursday that he is open to more talks with Seoul or even a summit with his South Korean counterpart, but stressed North Korea will continue to strengthen its military amid an atmosphere of distrust and tension while trying to diversify its economy and raise the national standard of living.
