According to North Korean state media, Kim climbed to the frigid, wind-swept summit of Mt. Paektu at dawn on Sunday with a group of elite North Korean Air Force fighter pilots. Photos released show a beaming Kim, clad in his traditional gray overcoat (with a distinct lack of any specialized hiking gear), posing with the military contingent and taking in views from the snow-covered mountain.
