Japanese tech company NEC is creating an on-the-fly method to make sure the Coach bag you're about to buy is the real deal.


The company is developing a product identification system that could help you spot counterfeits or knockoffs of the things you buy. This way, no one would be able to question the authenticity of your designer goods anymore, thank you very much. All you would have to do is use your smartphone (with a lens attachment) to snap a photo of the product in question.



It would work by using what NEC calls "object fingerprint authentication." The texture of zippers and fastens on these kinds of products are unusual enough — like fingerprints — that a close look could show you the difference between the real deal and a knockoff. Read more...
