Buffalo snow peaks at 7.3 feet during week of once-in-a-generation cold

The grand totals are in from the Buffalo area's deadly lake-effect snow event — and the town of Cowlesville, New York, hit the jackpot. That community, about 25 miles east-southeast from downtown Buffalo, picked up 88 inches of snow this week. That's a whopping 7.3 feet of snow.


The average annual snowfall in Buffalo is 93.4 inches, which means some areas saw nearly a year's worth of snow in about five days



Other eye-popping weekly snowfall totals include Lancaster, New York, which picked up 74 inches, Wales Center, with 69.3 inches, and Orchard Park, with 63 inches. There were multiple reports of between 50 and 60 inches of snow, but an extraordinarily sharp cutoff meant that a distance of only a couple of miles meant the difference between a few inches and an all-out blizzard.
