High-Speed Photos of Bullets Piercing Water Look Almost Impossible

Bulletthumb

High-speed photography requires a trained eye and an incredible sense of timing. Add objects that move faster than the speed of sound, and you might have a project that can be downright impossible.

Dutch photographer Alexander Augusteijn specializes in high-speed photography and designed his own equipment to capture bullets piercing colored water droplets. Using a special software, Augusteijn controls the water droplets, the firing of the guns, flashing lights and the camera shutter to capture mesmerizing photographs.

"I typically take a few hours to set up new scenery. After that, almost every shot is spot on, due to the precise level of control," Augusteijn told Mashable. Read more...

Beached-whale

A small Canadian town of 600 people is dealing with a colossal 60-ton problem.

The rotting carcass of a giant blue whale washed ashore near Trout River, Newfoundland, last week and is now spreading its stench throughout the town, according to multiple reports. LG G3 hits assembly line; shooting for 10mil units

The LG G3 doesn't have a specific launch date yet, but many believe that it will drop sometime near the end of May. And LG must be a a little busy bee, as the Korean manufacturer is aiming to sell 10 million units of the smartphone at its release. What further gives credence to these rumors is that LG has announced that it will be throwing an event on May 27th in May, San Francisco, New York, and London. The following day, the same event will take place in Singapore, Seoul, and Istanbul. So what will be headlining the event? Why not the company's upcoming flagship smartphone? It seems like a safe bet that the LG G3 will be the star of the show. Now 10 million units certainly seems like an almost unattainable sum for LG, given the manufacturer's earlier production difficulties. It doesn't help either that the G3 is going to be a specs beast: it'll pack a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, 3GB RAM, a 13MP camera, Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, 16 or 32GB storage options, and a 5.5" QHD screen, which is the main attraction of the device. Anybody think that LG will reach its target of 10 million...

Mean Girls and Beauty Queens: An Ode to the Real Janis Ian

Janisianthumb

Despite being the outcast in Mean Girls , Janis Ian carried a deeper meaning than the Plastics could ever fathom

She's more widely recognized as that fictional teenager, but the real Janis Ian was a singer-songwriter who, in 1975, wrote what is perhaps the most quintessentially angst-ridden adolescent ballad. Her Grammy-winning song "At Seventeen" sums up the 'Mean Girls' message and the struggle of the teen years in a way that's still relatable.

Though I didn’t know much about Tina Fey when I first saw Mean Girls 10 years ago, I knew I had stumbled upon a kindred spirit when the Burn Book revealed Janis’ last name as Ian. It was so subtle, waiting until the middle of the film to fully acknowledge the reference, but its impact was huge impact for those familiar with the singer Read more...

Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition leaked by Google

Having Google Play Editions of all popular flagships has become somewhat of a tradition. Now that the Samsung Galaxy S5 has been around for a while many fans are wondering if it will also get the GPE treatment. Apparently, Samsung and Google are working on such edition and Google has just spilled the beans. The device popped up briefly on the Play Store among the others GPE devices. Well, it didn't appear in its own listing, but under the Galaxy S4 name. Still, the image clearly shows the S5. A photoshopped S5 as it has both hardware and software keys at the bottom, which is not the case. But hey, it is the Galaxy S5 after all, it is on the Play Store, and someone at Google made those efforts to put it there, so this should mean something, right? Now that the Samsung Galaxy S5 GPE images have appeared on Google Play, we bet the announcement should be around the corner. Source (Cached) | Via 1 | Via...

Facebook Improves App Permissions, Introduces Anonymous Logins

Fb-anon

At Facebook's F8 Developer Conference, Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company is improving the way Facebook apps handle access permissions

Users will be able to decide what permissions they want to give to an app before signing-up and logging in.

Moreover, Facebook announced Anonymous Login, a new way for users to try out and log into apps. Users can now log into apps without handing over their information as a way to see if it's something they want to use or not.

Anonymous Login isn't totally anonymous — Facebook will know who you are — but the app maker won't. That's good because it means users can login anonymously across devices and applications. Read more...

Logotype

Designing a logo is simple, right? Think again. There's more to crafting a brand's visual identity than just placing a name in a square and calling it a day. Logo designers are in high demand, and it's for good reason — a logo is often a company's first impression, one that can impact a customer's brand perception, purchase decisions and overall attitude toward a product

We live in a society painted with brand logos. Even toddlers who can't yet tie their own shoelaces recognize many logos or are able to deduce what a company sells just by looking at its brandmark.

For those who are about to embark on a brand design journey, or think it's time for their company's visual identity to undergo a face lift, Mashable asked some some design experts to provide tips on creating a great logo Read more...

Acer_iconia_one_7-108-1

Acer is struggling. The Taiwanese hardware giant isn't alone; as the PC industry continues to contract, traditional PC makers such as Acer, HP and Dell are having trouble making an impact on the burgeoning tablet and smartphone space.

At a press event Tuesday, Jason Chen — who joined the Acer as CEO in January — was honest about the state of the company, and the challenges it faces. "I call it a reality check," Chen said, addressing the difficulties Acer has had over the last few quarters.

Now it's time for the company to focus. To do that, Chen said the company had to address two key questions, "What are we good at? What are our strengths?" Read more...

There Are Already Crowdfunding Campaigns to Buy the Clippers From Donald Sterling

Clippers

Major celebrities such as Magic Johnson, P.Diddy and Oprah are reportedly interested in buying the Los Angeles Clippers from owner Donald Sterling, but it looks like the Internet wants in, too.

A collection of crowdfunding campaigns have popped up on sites like Indiegogo as part of an effort to buy the Clippers from Sterling. A team backed by the people, for the people?

On Tuesday, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling from the NBA "for life," following an investigation into a leaked audio recording of the owner making a series of racist statements. (On the recording, Sterling berated his girlfriend for "broadcasting her associations" with African Americans and told her not to bring them to games.) Read more...

The Gender Wage Gap Is Real, Complicated and a Problem

Gender_gap

TNR-Logo-Main

Conservatives were not at all happy when President Obama issued executive orders to close the gender pay gap earlier this month. And they were particularly angry that Obama justified the change by arguing, famously, “[T]he average full-time working woman earns just $0.77 for every dollar a man earns.”

The figure, according to conservatives, is bunk. And to make their point, they cited an unpredictable source: Claudia Goldin a highly respected Harvard economist whose research on inequalities facing women in the economy has been widely cited by feminist causes. Here, for example, was Kay Hymowitz, from the right-leaning Manhattan Institute, during an appearance on MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes”: Read more...
