"If you go to Costa, you should watch out very closely at school today."
Those 14 words, written on the anonymous sharing app Yik Yak, caused a Los Angeles high school to go in lockdown mode last week. Similar threats in San Diego prompted two other schools to shut down and another in Illinois to beef up security. While it didn't name Yik Yak in particular, a February study by the National School Safety and Security Services found 35% of all violent threats to schools from August 2013 to January 2014 came via texting or social media
