USC Football Star Hurt in Pool Rescue — Unless He Wasn't

While college football stars are lionized by sports fans all the time, USC's Josh Shaw is a real-life hero — if his story holds up.


USC opens its season on Saturday, but Shaw is out indefinitely with a pair of ankle injuries. He didn't get hurt in practice though; no, Shaw injured himself leaping from a second-floor balcony to save a drowning nephew, according to a report on the team's website Monday.



Saw was at a family gathering in Palmdale, California, on Saturday when he noticed a 7-year-old nephew who can't swim struggling in an apartment-complex pool, according to USC's official site. Shaw then jumped from the second-floor balcony where he was standing, landed on concrete and suffered two high-ankle sprains. But, according to USC, he summoned the strength to crawl into the pool and and save his nephew, then pull himself out of the water "despite the intense pain in his legs." Read more...
